The Citadel Fund provides unrestricted funds to The Citadel to cover those vital expenses that may not be covered by state appropriations or tuition and fees. Such costs include:
The Citadel Fund - Academic scholarships
While The Citadel has more than 250 individual scholarship endowments restricted to a variety of award criteria, each year The Citadel Scholarship Committee falls short of having sufficient unrestricted scholarship funds to build a freshman class with a diverse group of students. Unrestricted funds for scholarships ensure the college is able to recruit top students with high academic credentials who are competitive at all colleges. Typically, the college requires up to $500,000 in unrestricted funds for academic scholarships annually.
The Citadel Fund - Athletic scholarships
Each year, The Citadel awards $1.8 million in athletic scholarships. Even with this sum, the college is only supporting 144 of 180 NCAA authorized athletic scholarships. In addition to the extraordinary annual support of The Citadel Brigadier Foundation, the athletic department typically requires $600,000-$900,000 in unrestricted funds each year. These unrestricted funds are used for grant-in-aid scholarships not covered by athletic scholarship fundraising and revenue generation. State appropriations and tuition dollars cannot be used to support athletic scholarship programs.
