Board Elects New Officers, Members

April 2010

The Citadel Foundation elected new officers and members at the spring meeting of its Board of Directors. Stephen C. Tobias, retired vice chairman and chief operating officer of Norfolk Southern Corporation, has been named chairman, and Peter Sulick, Jr., President and CEO of AmeriSite LLC, was named Secretary-Treasurer. Tobias replaces Charles B. Coe, '73, who served as chairman since 2006 and remains on the board.

Steve Tobias, '67A 1967 graduate of The Citadel, Tobias has been a director of the Foundation since 2004, serving as chairman of the Investment Committee and member of the Development and Executive committees. As chair of the Campaign for The Citadel Steering Committee, Tobias was instrumental in guiding the success of The Citadel Foundation's $100 million capital campaign, which exceeded this goal by nearly $8 million. He and his wife, Connie, reside in Garnett, S.C., and have two sons, Shawn and Justin, both of whom are Citadel graduates.

Shortly before retiring from Norfolk Southern in 2009, Tobias was named Railway Age magazine's 2008 Railroader of the Year. The cover story announcing the award in the magazine's January 2008 issue best illustrates the quality of leadership he brings to The Citadel Foundation. The article cites his "accessibility and hands-on approach to his position, his genuine interest in the welfare of employees, his sense of fairness, his commitment to operational excellence and safety, the mutual respect he generates, the leadership he consistently provides, his strategic focus and his belief in advanced technologies," all of which contributed to Norfolk Southern's long-standing position as one of the best-run and safest railroads in its class.

Sulick is a 1972 graduate of The Citadel and resides in Naples, Fl., with his wife, Margaret. He currently serves as President and CEO of AmeriSite, a family-owned real estate development and investment company. He is an entrepreneur with an extensive background in building media and technology companies, executing the business strategy and building operations. He has founded four companies over the past 25 years, including Independence Broadcasting Corporation, PowerFone Inc., SSPCS Corporation, and AmeriSite.

Sulick has served on the board of Florida Gulf Coast University Foundation since 2002 as member, secretary, chair, and now emeritus director. He currently serves on The Citadel School of Business Administration Advisory Board and was elected to the school's Business Hall of Fame in April 2008.

Also elected at the meeting were two new directors. John C. L. Darby, '85, is president and CEO of the Beach Company, and Frank B. Peters, Jr., '60, owns F.B.P. Investments and is chairman Americraft Leather. Both have been elected to serve four-year terms, filling the positions vacated by retiring board members William B. Sansom, '64, and Francis P. Mood, Jr., '60.
