The Class of 1969's 50th Reunion Campaign - Join Us!

The Citadel Foundation is working hand-in-hand with each class to create a reunion model that competes with our peer schools and academics. Through this new tradition, known as Class Reunion Campaigns (CRC), those classes celebrating significant reunions will have an opportunity to rally together in support of The Citadel and its greatest needs. Please join the class in leaving a legacy at The Citadel.

In November 2019, the Class of 1969 will return to The Citadel to celebrate a 50th Reunion. To mark this momentous occasion the class has set a goal of $3,000,000 for The Citadel which includes support for a project on campus.

Dear members of the Class of 1969,

Our 50th Citadel Class reunion is just two-years away!  Since we entered through the sallyport of Padgett-Thomas Barracks, many things changed.  When we were cadets, 50th reunion classes were World War I veterans. Today’s cadets see us as the Vietnam veterans.

The world transformed since 1969, and so have we.  However, the binding element among us is our shared experience as members of the Corps of Cadets and The Perfect Class of 1969.  Sadly, we have said final farewells to 87 of our classmates, and too frequently we are adding more names to that list.

The Citadel is the #1 Best College among its peers in the South for the sixth consecutive year according to US News and World Report’s ratings.  However, it continues to face budgetary cutbacks from the State.  When I arrived back in 1994 as the Commandant, we were receiving 40% of our budget from the State and replacing Capers Hall was our #1 priority for a State funded Bond Bill.  Today we receive 8% funding from the State and due to a lack of a state bond bill over the years, replacing Capers Hall still sits as the #1 bond bill priority.

Even with the drastic funding changes, our alma mater has been able to grow and develop thanks to the generosity of many of our alumni.  Class Reunion Campaigns are one of the major mechanisms to making this possible.  It is now our time for the Class of 1969 to again step forward!

The Citadel’s Administration and Board recently decided to proceed on its own to replace Capers Hall, a historic building that hasn’t changed much since all of us took classes there.  But our alma mater needs our help to make that possible.  Our time has come!  Our 50th Class Reunion Campaign’s first-priority is to raise $1,000,000 towards this effort and in return we will earn the naming rights for The Class of 1969 Capers Hall Auditorium which is the centerpiece of the new building.

In the coming months, your Company Representative (see the list on the back) will be contacting you to ask for your consideration to make an outright gift, a pledge, or a legacy gift to meet the goals of our 50th Class Reunion Campaign.  The Committee is assisted by Josephine Rex, our liaison at The Citadel Foundation.  Please contact her with any questions at (843) 953-6716, email: josephine.rex@citadel.edu.  You can also stay up to date with our Campaign efforts by visiting:  http://foundation.citadel.edu/1969giving.

Many thanks for your consideration and financial support of The Citadel.
With deep appreciation,

Joe Trez

Class of 1969 Reunion Campaign Project

The Class of 1969 Reunion Campain Committee has chosen two projects the class will support for the 50th Class Reunion Campaign. Once the goal of the first project is met, funding will be applied to the second project.

The Class of 1969 Auditorium
The Class of 1969 is committing to a $1,000,000 gift for the Capers Hall Renovation Project which would result in the naming rights for The Class of 1969 Auditorium.  The vision for the Capers Hall renovation is one that will link our best traditions of the past with our brightest hopes for the future. The concept necessitates a larger building on the southeastern entrance to the campus. It will retain its original facade and entrance portico. Added to that will be three new wings around a central quadrangle, similar in style to the Moorish design of the barracks.  The 250-seat auditorium will be the centerpiece of the new Capers Hall and provide The Citadel with a new multi-purpose auditorium facility.

The Class of 1969 Scholarship
This class scholarship was started during the 25th Reunion.  It currently has approximately $250,000 in the corpus.  It has provided annually funds to deserving cadets over the years with first-priority being awarded to descendants of the class.  In any given year, we have had from one to three recipients.  An additional $250,000 is needed to fully endow the scholarship and provide the funds for a full in-state scholarship per year.
