The Class of 1977's 40th Reunion Campaign - Join Us!

The Citadel Foundation is working hand-in-hand with each class to create a reunion model that competes with our peer schools and academies.  Through this new tradition, known as Class Reunion Campaigns (CRC), those classes celebrating significant reunions will have an opportunity to rally together in support of The Citadel and its greatest needs. Please join the class in leaving a legacy at The Citadel!

In November 2017, the Class of 1977 will return to The Citadel to celebrate a 40th Reunion. To mark this momentous occasion the class has set a goal of $1,000,000 for The Citadel which includes support for a project on campus.

September 2016

Dear Gentlemen and 1977 Classmates,

I bring you greetings on behalf of our Class of 1977 Reunion Campaign (CRC) committee and would like to express our thanks for your ongoing support of The Citadel. Without the continued support and dedication of the alumni and friends, our college could not continue to excel as the distinguished institution that it is.

Can you believe that we are preparing for our 40th reunion!?! If you have been following what is happening at the school, you know that The Citadel has experienced many successes and accomplishments across these almost 40-years and continues to be recognized as an educational leader. However, it should not come as any surprise that the challenging financial situation we are experiencing across the country is also affecting The Citadel.

These continuing national and state budgetary pressures seem to be more extreme here in South Carolina and I think that you may be surprised to learn that state support to the school is projected to only be approximately 9% of the school’s 2016-2017 total operating budget. The good news here is that Citadel friends and alumni lead the national average when it comes to financial support.

In order to leave an enduring legacy and do our part to keep The Citadel moving forward, the ’77 CRC committee has identified the Class of 1977 40th Reunion overall fundraising goal to be $1,000,000, to include all cash and legacy gifts.

Yep – that’s two commas! But don’t worry, we have a total of three years to raise this money, which actually started last year and ends next year, the year of our 40th Reunion. Given that timeline, you may be surprised to learn that we’ve already raised $650,514 toward reaching our overall goal! Well done! Within this overall goal, the CRC committee has designated one specific area of focus and support during our campaign, that being our Class Project:

Class of 1977 Great Lawn at Bastin Hall: Goal of $250,000

A major milestone of the LEAD Plan 2018, the college’s strategic plan, is to construct Bastin Hall, the new home for the School of Business. This state-of-the-art facility will meet the evolving needs of future entrepreneurs and business leaders. The Class of 1977 Great Lawn will be a prominent feature of Bastin Hall, providing an outdoor space for cadets and graduate students to gather to study and socialize as they prepare to launch their business careers. The Class of 1977 Great Lawn will also serve as a space for special events, which will provide opportunities for additional community involvement while generating revenue for The Citadel.

The Bastin Hall Great Lawn project was selected by the committee based on our class’s interests and The Citadel’s greatest needs. However, you can direct your support to any fund or area on campus if this does not coincide with your philanthropic interests. For example, in additional to the Class Project, Cheech Rodriguez has suggested that classmates consider designating a portion of their donation to replace the Pipe Band uniforms, which he estimates will cost approximately $50,000.

Here are a few things to note as we move forward:

•A campaign gift is intended to be something meaningful, above and beyond your annual support. Please continue to support those areas of the college that depend on your annual donation. Remember, ALL GIFTS COUNT toward the overall $1M goal.

•The class has until December 31st, 2017 to make a commitment of a pledge or gift, and pledge fulfilment can be extended through December 31st, 2020.

•The class project requires cash and pledges to meet the goal. Legacy gifts will count towards the overall $1M goal. What that really means is that while we are more than half-way to our $1 M goal, we are only just beginning to realize donations toward the $250,000 required for the Bastin Hall Great Lawn goal.

If you haven’t been an annual contributor - now is the time to commit to start paying it forward. Our 40th reunion year is the perfect opportunity for us to make that financial contribution to ensure our Class of ’77 legacy at The Citadel.

In the coming months, your designated Company Representative will be contacting you to ask for your consideration to make an outright gift, a pledge, and/or a legacy gift to meet our Class Reunion Campaign goals. The committee is being assisted by the Foundation’s Class Reunion Campaign Team and you may also contact them directly with any questions regarding our Class Reunion Campaign. November 2015

Esteemed gentlemen and 1977 Classmates,

It’s hard to believe we are less than two years away from our 40th class reunion.  At this time thirty-eight years ago, we were contemplating marriage, family, and careers – eagerly looking forward to all that life had to offer.  Now it is our time to step up on behalf of the institution that helped build our character as well as our values; that helped us become “Citadel Men”. This is why we have established “The Class of 1977 40th Reunion Campaign.”

The Citadel Foundation works hand-in-hand with each class to create a reunion model that competes with our peer schools and academies.  Through this new tradition, known as Class Reunion Campaigns (CRC), those classes celebrating significant reunions have an opportunity to rally together in support of The Citadel and its greatest needs.  More importantly, the campaign offers each of us a vehicle to reach out to our classmates and maintain some of the most formative and important relationships we have known.

A Campaign by definition means above and beyond annual giving. During this period, our Annual Giving Class Chairmen, Willis Tisdale and Jim Danielson, will work closely with me as the Class Reunion Campaign Chairman and the CRC committee. It is most important during a Class Reunion Campaign to understand the difference between this special effort and annual giving:

•For example, if you are already making annual gifts to The Citadel Fund or the Brigadier Foundation, please continue to do so.  We do not want those areas on campus that depend on your generous donations to suffer due to this special effort.  And most importantly, all of these gifts will be counted towards our CRC goal.
•Our campaign gift documentation period spans a three-year duration, from Jan. 1, 2015 through Dec. 31, 2017.  More information about the goals and objectives of our Class of 1977 Reunion Campaign will be forthcoming.
•You can also keep up to date with our CRC efforts on our class page at

In the coming months, classmates who are members of the CRC committee will be contacting you.  Additionally, Development Officer, Veronica Vereen with The Citadel Foundation, is available to assist you, so please feel free to contact her directly at 843-953-1861, or via email at  As always, you can reach out to me as well, at

I personally want to thank each of you in advance for considering ways to support our reunion campaign, and thus our Alma Mater.  We will be sharing a number of flexible giving alternatives that are available as you consider your CRC support.  Remember, it is not how much you give, but the fact that you choose to participate at the most meaningful level possible.  We look forward to seeing you in Charleston during Homecoming 2017 and at our 40th reunion.

Oh Thank Heaven for ’77!
