Ken Burger Athletic Memorial Scholarship

ken burgerThe Ken Burger Athletic Memorial Scholarship was established October 22, 2015, on what would have been Ken Burger’s 66th birthday.

Although Ken was not a graduate of The Citadel (University of Georgia, 1973), he admired their military tradition and spent many hours on the campus at various athletic events during his years as Executive Sports Editor for The Post and Courier.
Ken’s great-grandfather, Orin Hunter, Citadel Class of 1894, not only graduated from The Citadel, but was part of the engineering faculty for several years.

The Ken Burger Athletic Memorial Scholarship will be awarded to a cadet-student-athlete from the state of South Carolina.  When Ken wrote his infamous column on women’s basketball, he was reacting to the fact that the rosters of both local women’s teams he was watching consisted of athletes from other states and countries.  Being a lover of his home state, he believed strongly in taking care of our native sons and daughters first.
