The Citadel Department of Health, Exercise, and Sport Science

Dr. Hank Cross Human Performance Laboratory

HESS Human Performance Lab mock-up

The Citadel's Health, Exercise, and Sport Science Department will soon start construction of a brand new Human Performance Laboratory in Deas Hall. The new lab will be located on the first floor, utilizing some of the Men’s Locker Room area and will include a conference room and a 14-person computer lab. This is made possible due to a gift from Bite Tech, Inc, which has supported research in our department for several years. The Dr. Hank Cross Human Performance Laboratory will be a state-of-the-art, high-technology learning laboratory used for:

    • Continuing research on use of the Bite Tech mouthpiece during exercise as it relates to changes in levels of the stress hormone cortisol, airway openings, lactate levels, and changes in oxygen and carbon dioxide kinetics in various populations such as college-aged, middle-aged, and older populations. This research will not only move a beneficial product to market, but it will also increase the profile of The Citadel as the research center for that product, which is being promoted and marketed by Under Armour and Patterson Dental.
    • Assessing other hormonal and stress markers related to athletes and their performance.
    • Understanding effects of exercise and nutrition on cancer survivors.
    • Conducting a multitude of other research and studies related to human performance and fitness to include height/weight assessments for students on-campus and others off-campus who want an understanding of their fitness levels related to body composition.
    • A center for cooperative research with other universities and The Department of Defense with the goal of improving performance of their personnel.

This lab must contain state-of-the-art equipment to assess and determine a variety of different measurements such as hormonal and blood differences in different conditions, maximal oxygen consumption, body composition, bone density, and a variety of other factors. We would also like to have funds to renovate the old Human Performance Lab into a new classroom and a fund to be used for maintenance and upkeep of this new equipment.

Please consider a gift to The Citadel Foundation toward one or more of the equipment needs for this facility. You may designate your gift “in honor of” or “in memory of” someone who has had an important impact upon your life, and all donors will be invited to the grand opening and dedication of the new Dr. Hank Cross Human Performance Laboratory in the fall.  Donors will also have their name and equipment donated on a plaque in the lab.

Please complete the secure online giving form below, or send contributions to The Citadel Foundation, 171 Moultrie Street, Charleston, SC 29409. If you have any questions about how to designate your gifts or for other ideas on how to make a gift, you can contact Bill Yaeger, ’83, who liaisons with the School of Science and Mathematics for The Citadel Foundation. He may be contacted at (843) 953-3842 or bill.yaeger@citadel.edu.

Please let me know if you need anything from us here on campus, and we encourage you to come visit us in Deas Hall soon.
