Frequently Asked Questions

The Citadel Parents Philanthropy Program was established in 2016 with the mission to instill the values of The Citadel in parents of cadets to ensure the legacy of The Citadel continues for generations.

What is The Citadel Foundation's Parent Philanthropy Program?

The Citadel Foundation Parent Philanthropy Program seeks to educate parents of Citadel cadets about the importance of private giving to The Citadel and ask for their philanthropic support.  The Citadel Foundation Parent Philanthropy Program allows families to support The Citadel and meet the greatest needs of the Corps of Cadets.

How does The Citadel Foundation's Parent Philanthropy Program work?

During the course of each year, all parents are invited to make a gift through the Parent Philanthropy Program through mailings, the Cadet Calling Center, and information shared at Parents’ Weekend and Corps Day Weekend.   Each year, the Parent Philanthropy Council will determine which areas the Parent Philanthropy Program will prioritize.  However, though the Parent Philanthropy Program chooses five priorities, parents are welcome to give to any area they want.

Where does the money go?

Gifts to The Citadel Foundation Parents Philanthropy Program priorities provide unrestricted dollars to cover those vital expenses that may not be covered by state appropriations or tuition and fees.  The gifts also support the most pressing needs that affect cadets each year.  To learn more about the priorities of the Parents Philanthropy Program, visit:

Why aren’t these expenses covered by tuition?

It will cost $118 million to run The Citadel for the 2015-2016 academic year. Many people think that the combination of student tuition and appropriations from the state of South Carolina are what keep the college operating each year. The truth is that the state contributes roughly 8.6% of The Citadel’s budget, and tuition and fees account for approximately 37.3%.  The remaining 54.4% must be generated through competitive grants, sales and services, and the loyal support of alumni, parents, and friends of The Citadel.

Will my gift make a difference?

ABSOLUTELY!  Every gift counts, and gifts of all amounts to The Citadel Foundation are appreciated.  Whether large or small, your gift will be joined with the gifts of other parents, and it is the total of all gifts from parents that has the greatest impact.  Give whatever you can.  When over 2,000 families join together to do what they can, the results - and dollars - make a huge difference to Citadel cadets.
