The Colonel Harvey M. Dick, '53 Memorial Ring Endowment

"It's not just about the's about the character of the person
who wears the ring that makes it so special."
- LTC Harvey M. Dick, '53

Many cadets within the Long Gray Line of The Citadel matriculated with a steadfast vision to one day wear the band of gold. The unique ring would permanently bond them as brothers and sisters in the same community, and each of them would travel the world with equal values of honor and duty and respect. Unfortunately, for reasons beyond the control of a few of these cadets, the financial resources needed have presented a challenge…until now.

Colonel Harvey Dick, former Assistant Commandant of cadets in charge of discipline, and long-time member of The Citadel Board of Visitors, died on Saturday, Jan. 28, 2012, after a short, but tough battle with cancer. Strong-willed with an opinion to match, Col.Dick was a caring father figure, mentor, disciplinarian and friend to two generations of cadets – and some of their children who became cadets. Col. Dick’s love of The Citadel ran deep and his love for and impact on the lives of the students he mentored and disciplined are profound. Many times during his tenure at The Citadel, Col. Dick quietly provided funds for cadets who could not afford their ring. Today, with the price of gold at record levels, there are more and more students who are facing the possibility of not being able to afford their ring.

To this end, a group of alumni have established The Colonel Harvey M. Dick, ’53 Memorial Ring Endowment. The purpose of this endowed fund is to provide resources to deserving students at The Citadel who need financial assistance in purchasing their class rings.  The goal is to raise a minimum of $62,500 over the next 5 years. The more money that is raised, the more students can be helped.

In order to do this, it is imperative that members of the Long Gray Line step up and continue Col. Dick’s work.
